Successful language learning strategies

Many successful adult language learners rely on various metacognitive strategies to plan and monitor their learning [1; 2]. Below are some examples of this disciplined approach:

  1. actively pursuing sources of authentic language input

  2. consciously attending to language use and form in the input

  3. learning paragraphs or short stories by heart

  4. copying texts

  5. reading aloud

  6. repeating words, phrases, and sentences while listening or reading

  7. memorizing expressions or sentences and using them in one's own speech/writing

  8. listening to the same text or dialogue until being able to hear and understand every word

  9. recording and re-recording oneself until satisfied

  10. practicing different language skills every day.
