Foreign language learning: Classroom instruction versus immersion
Have you wondered whether it is better to learn a second language in the classroom or during an immersion experience?Research shows that classroom learning engages the explicit memory system that relies on strategic processes and is subject to conscious recall, whereas naturalistic learning engages implicit memory that requires little to no conscious awareness and relies on automatic processes. On the other hand, classroom activities often focus on form rather than meaning and may not engage learners enough to establish strong memory traces, in contrast to meaningful and relevant real-life interactions that engage ‘deep’ processing and result in better retention and automatic recall.
It seems that the two types of language learning offer different advantages, and, ideally, should complement each other.
